5 Things to do in South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a great place to check out if you are looking to do something in the wilderness and just take a chill day.  My niece and her new beau accompanied me on this day trip.  It took and hour and a half to reach Lake Tahoe district.  It was late October when I went and the temperature was a cool 12 degrees Celcius.  Perfect after three days of 28 degree weather in Sacramento.  We took Hwy 50 to Lake Tahoe and the roads can be a bit curvy on the way up before coming down to sea level.  However, the views of the changing leaves and creeks running through more than make up for it.  Here are some things to do in South Lake Tahoe.

1. The Getaway Cafe

The Getaway Cafe is tucked away along the roadside giving tourists and locals a place to stop and have a bite to eat before descending to the lake.  Its a family owned cafe with wonderful friendly staff and great food.  It has an outdoor patio where you can sit and eat in peace while listening to the birds.

2. Round Hill Pines Resort Beach and Marina

If you are looking for the nicest part of Lake Tahoe to take a dip in that isn't packed with people after the summer months, come to the Round Hill Pines Resort Beach and Marina.  You will be greeted by the finest sandy beach around surrounded by clear crystal waters.  There is a boat marina for water sports and the beach can be used for volleyball tournaments or to just lay on the beach.  We did see some people laying on the beach when we went. Great place to come chill for awhile, anytime of the year.

Location: Off Hwy US-50

3. Casinos

Lake Tahoe is pretty well known for its casinos.  Not exactly Las Vegas, but it has some noteworthy Casinos to check out. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Lake Tahoe,  Mont Bleau Casino, Harrah's Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino, Lakeside Inn and Casino and countless of many more.  It just depends on what type of vacation you are looking for.  Whether you come for the high-end spas, restaurants or just to relax, these casinos have it all.

4.  Trails

Kingsbury North Trailhead

The Kingsbury North Trailhead, which is a part of the The Tahoe Rim Trail is located 8000 ft above sea level.  It is accessible by car.  Kingsbury North Trailhead is located at the top of Kingsbury Grade Rd.  It is a 15 min drive to the trailhead.  Once there, you can park your car and start your journey for some striking views of Lake Tahoe while walking through the ancient fir trees.  The trail is used for hiking, biking, camping and horseback riding.

Glen Alpine Falls

Glen Alpine Falls has an upper and lower falls.  It is a short hike found off the beaten path.  From Hwy 50, take Fallen Leaf Road on the left and continue to the marina where you will find signs leading to the falls.  Continue on and you can park at the Desolation Wilderness and upper falls.

Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls is a 15 min hike roundtrip from the Bayview Campground.  Located in the Emerald Bay area, the hike will lead you to views of Cascade Lake and of Lake Tahoe.  The fall itself is 200 ft down.  Great hike if you want something short and scenic.

5.  Shopping for Souvenirs

Lake Tahoe is famous for its black bears.  Finding a souvenir is always a must so you know it will have something to do with a black bear.  I bought a little snow globe with a black bear and a tree inside.  There are countless of souvenir shops along Hwy 50 to stop along at.  Stop in and find your treasure to take back home with you.
